The video clip below is a third base view of Pete Rose hitting from the left side of the plate.

One thing to notice is how as he strides he "walks away" from his hands; his body moves forward as he strides but his hands stay back where they started out.
     This allows him to generate the momentum he needs to swing but keeps him from having to commit as long as possible. As a result, if he gets fooled by an off-speed pitch his hands are still back and he is able to adjust to the pitch.
