Swing Analysis -
David Ortiz

The video clip below is of a swing by David Ortiz. I'm not
sure, but I assume the result of the swing was a home run to
right field.

Above is a continuous view of David Ortiz's swing.
David Ortiz
Above is a basic version of the swing, slowed down from "Go" through
the Point Of Contact (POC). Notice how David Ortiz goes back and
loads before he starts his swing. Also, note the textbook
position at the POC.
David Ortiz
Above is the same clip annotated to show how long David
Ortiz's stride is and how much his hips move. The key point is
that, while David Ortiz takes a relatively short stride, his
hips still move forward a significant amount.
David Ortiz
Above is an isolation of David Ortiz's lower body. Some
things to notice are how he gets his stride going sideways with
a push off the side of his back foot and then goes into
rotation. Notice how he lands with his front knee bent and then
extends it, pulling him up onto his back toe.
