Greg Maddux

12/28/2007

Greg Maddux is one of my favorite pitchers because I believe he exemplifies what the word "pitching" means.
It doesn't mean just throwing hard.
Instead, it means keeping the ball down, throwing with control, hitting your spots, and deceiving the batter. I believe Greg Maddux's near-perfect mechanics explain both his success and his longevity.
I believe that every young pitchers would be well-served by emulating the pitching mechanics of Greg Maddux.
If you want to see more pictures of Greg Maddux, and my detailed take on his mechanics, you might want to look at my frame by frame analysis of Greg Maddux's pitching mechanics . I have also put together image sequences of a number of pitchers, including Greg Maddux.

Notice how, in the seven photos above, Greg
Maddux keeps his elbows below the level
of his shoulders as his PAS forearm passes through
the high cocked position and during the process
of Scapular Loading (aka Scapula Loading).

in a very good fielding position. This
helps to explain his 14 gold gloves.

Greg Maddux Image Sequence
Below are a number of frames from a video of Greg Maddux which illustrate his arm action. I have highlighted how he makes more of a "W" than an "M" or an Inverted W. I think Greg Maddux's arm action is one key to his longevity.
