Swing Analysis - Magglio Ordonez

A couple of people have been bugging me about doing another frame by frame swing analysis, do I decided to oblige them with an analysis of the swing of Magglio Ordonez PDF.

Recent Photos of Albert Pujols' Swing

As you know, I collect examples of the swings of major league hitters, including Albert Pujols. Below are a few recent examples of Albert Pujols' swing.

Albert Pujols

Albert Pujols - Home Run

This is a classic picture of Albert Pujols at the Point Of Contact on a home run swing. Notice how he's showing lots of connection, with his back elbow bent 90 degrees and in the Power L position. Notice how, rather than squishing the bug, his back knee is bent 90 degrees and he is on the tip of his back toe. Notice how his front knee is locked and is helping to power the rotation of his hips. Finally, notice how, rather than swinging level, his hands are above the head of the bat at the Point Of Contact.

Albert Pujols - Single

Here's another picture of Albert Pujols hitting a single. His mechanics are very good on this swing -- good Power L in his back elbow, good tilt over the plate, 90 degree angle in back knee, and on the point of his back toe -- which means he probably swung slightly under the ball.

Albert Pujols - Single

Finally, here's another picture of Albert Pujols hitting a single. In this case, it looks like he chased a slider or some other pitch low and away. Notice how he's relatively disconnected and extended at the Point of Contact and his back elbow is making more of a Power V than a Power L.
Now, you do have to disconnect and extend to a degree to get to a pitch that is low and away, but by doing so it's hard to hit it hard (because disconnecting and extending through the Point Of Contact will slow your swing down). That's why good hitters only swing at pitches low and away if they have to (e.g. because they are protecting the plate due to an 0-2 count).

Ken Griffey Swing Analysis - Cincinnati Enquirer

I've been quiet of late because I've been working on a couple of baseball-related projects. One is a rotational hitting DVD. The other is an analysis of the swing of Ken Griffey Jr. that I put together for the Cincinnati Enquirer to commemorate Junior's impending 600th home run. Ken Griffey Jr. has a very nice swing and every hitter should study the analysis above and the frame by frame analysis of the swing of Ken Griffey Jr. PDF that I put together a few months ago.
